From 13 to 24 May 2024, a team of ten inspectors, who have been delegated authority to carry out examinations of places of detention under COTA, made an unannounced inspection of Waikeria Prison.
Inspectors were guided by the Ombudsman’s Expectations for the conditions and treatment of people in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
Inspectors gathered and assessed a range of information, including documents, interviews, and observing facility activities.
Before leaving the facility, inspectors met with Prison management to outline their initial observations.
