Making disability rights real in places of detention
The Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand visits places where people are detained to check their treatment and conditions under OPCAT. The Chief Ombudsman is also one of three partners of New Zealand’s Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM), which promotes, protects and monitors the implementation of the Disability Convention.
This webinar explores the inherent links between OPCAT and the Disability Convention and how these can work together in the interests of disability rights. New Zealand Ombudsman staff present important considerations for people with disabilities in places of detention and some experiences from New Zealand.

Making Disability Rights Real in a Pandemic
This webinar covers how COVID-19 affected disability communities in New Zealand, and the New Zealand Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) report "Making Disability Rights Real in a Pandemic".
The webinar features Chrissie Cowan, CEO of Kāpō Māori Aotearoa New Zealand, who speaks about Tāngata Whaikaha Māori (disabled Māori) experiences of the pandemic, including an outline about why Ombudsman institutions can, and should, include disabled people’s voices (in particular indigenous people’s voices), in their monitoring under the Disability Convention.
