Need to know information for care or custody providers

Care or custody providers’ (providers) are now directly subject to the Official Information Act (OIA) following the Oversight of Oranga Tamariki System Act 2022 opens page in this tab that came into effect on 1 May 2023. 

The law provides the Chief Ombudsman additional powers and duties when dealing with complaints and investigations relating to tamariki, rangatahi, and their whānau, in the Oranga Tamariki system.

This means that members of the public may make a request under the OIA to a provider for information that it holds, and the provider must consider the request and respond to it in accordance with the requirements of the OIA.
