New Zealand’s official information legislation is a powerful way for people to access government information and participate in our democracy.

The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way information is accessed, interpreted and understood. Some people are choosing to use AI to help them with official information requests.

AI can help both requesters and agencies to summarise, organise and refine information. However, AI does not get it right all the time. AI can create official information requests which are long, complex and misleading.

This guide has some practical advice to help agencies deal effectively with official information requests made using or about AI. It also contains some advice for agencies to consider if choosing to use AI themselves to help process requests.

Please also see our guide on Practical advice for requesters on how to use AI responsibly.

AI is a developing area, and we will update this guide from time to time.  Please contact us if you have any queries that are not addressed in this guide. This will help us develop and enhance this guidance over time.
