Pūhara Mana Tangata releases second report
Pūhara Mana Tangata, the Chief Ombudsman’s Māori Panel, has today released a report celebrating its work and achievements over the past two years.
Pūhara Mana Tangata was set up in 2019 in response to Peter Boshier’s wish to be more responsive to Māori. Te Pūrongo nā Te Pūhara Mana Tangata ki te Kaitiaki Mana Tangata 2022-24 is its second report.
Some of the highlights during the period include the continued strengthening of the relationships with Kiingitanga, iwi and Māori communities; implementation of the Te Ao Māori Transformation Programme; the launch and implementation of the Te Ao Māori Strategy; adopting the Pītau design to represent the values that underpin the work of the Ombudsman; development of a Māori community engagement strategy; the fifth successful year of the Kiingitanga summer internship programme and the publication of resources for schools and kura in English and Te Reo Māori.
“Pūhara Mana Tangata would like to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of the Ombudsman’s office in building their understanding and capabilities relating to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori. We have seen significant progress in the office because of the leadership, commitment and value placed by office staff on understanding Māori perspectives and circumstances in relation to the role of the Ombudsman,” the report says.
The report also acknowledges the Chief Ombudsman and the ‘exemplary manaakitanga’ towards Pūhara and the kaupapa of Tuia kia ōrite | Fairness for All.
Mr Boshier leaves Office on 28 March.
