OIA and LGOIMA requests over the holidays

Issue date:

By law, when you ask an agency for official information they have to respond to your request as soon as reasonably practicable and no later than 20 working days after they got it.

However, over the holiday period there is a three week period that doesn’t count as ‘working days’.

For Official Information Act (OIA) requests, that period is 25 December 2019 to 15 January 2020, inclusive. That means any OIA requests submitted on 27 November 2019 or later may take a bit longer than you expected. Our OIA calculator can show you the latest date you can expect a response.

For Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA) requests, the period is 20 December 2019 to 10 January 2020, inclusive. This affects LGOIMA requests submitted on 22 November 2019 or after, or 21 November 2019 for agencies observing Chatham Islands or Westland anniversary dates. For more information see the following guide.
